November 4th

8 miles Fight Club

Out and back with Welsh. We got passed by Ari Lambi, who was hammering a run.

53 miles in 6 runs for the week. A decent week of running, which is good since I'll be in NYC for parts of the next two weeks and probably won't get any decent running in.

November 3rd

10 miles at Baylands

Kind of a rough run. I was pretty dehydrated and sluggish from taking Friday off. Another warm day.

Friday, November 2, 2007

November 1st

8 miles at Baylands

Out and back by myself. Will need to think of some road routes for next week when it'll be dark an hour earlier.

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

October 31st

9 miles on the roads

Ran on the roads since the sun wasn't up yet. Woke up at 5am and couldn't fall back asleep, so figured that rather than tossing and turning for 3 hours, I might as well get my run out of the way. Ran down Alma, up Loma Verde, looped around, and came back down East Meadow. Legs were a little dead but an okay run.

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

October 30th

8 miles at Moffett/Evelyn Creek

Ran out by the NASA center, back on the bike path, and added on a loop around the fields behind my building.

Monday, October 29, 2007

October 29th

10 miles at Baylands

The usual loop along the bay. Felt really great today and finished up at a pretty decent clip just as it started raining. Perfect weather out and just one of those nights that I could run forever.

Sunday, October 28, 2007

October 28th

7.5 miles on the roads

Ran out to the cemetery across from Gunn High School, did a few loops, and came back on the bikepath. Say what you will about global warming, but it was nice to be able to run without a shirt on in late October.

51 miles in 6 runs for the week.

Saturday, October 27, 2007

October 27th

11.5 miles at Arastradero

Rather than doing the usual loop, Welsh showed me a neat little peripheral trail in the Foothills section of the preserve. With the leaves covering most of the narrow footpath, it reminded me a lot of some New Hampshire runs like Boston Lot or Montshire.

The hills were tough and my legs are pretty dead, but I'll see how I feel tomorrow. Wasn't quite as long a run as I wanted to get in this week but was too drained to add on.

Friday, October 26, 2007

October 26th

8 miles at Baylands

The usual out-and-back at Baylands. Felt much better tonight. My sleeping has still been all messed up lately, and the more I stress out about it, the worse it gets.

Thursday, October 25, 2007

October 25th

7 miles at Moffet/Evelyn Creek

Ugh. Felt really sluggish today after getting hammered on yesterday and after having had 4 consecutive terrible nights of sleep. I don't know what's wrong with me.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

October 24th

10 miles at Shoreline/Baylands

This run was a perfect example of why I dislike running with most of the guys at work besides Crosby and Eddie. Ran 3 by myself and then met up with a few of the guys from work. Some clown decided he would try and drop everyone and we ran the next 4 miles at sub 6:00 pace. Then he turns off and leaves while the rest of us added on. Classy.

The late night of eating fried food probably didn't help. Also, my insomnia seems to have resurfaced. I've woken up at 3am the past three nights. Woof.

Monday, October 22, 2007

October 22nd

7 miles at Shoreline/Moffet

This run is actually called "Ghost Town". I'm not quite sure why. Ran with Crosby and two other guys from work. The guys at work run at quite a bit faster pace than I like my runs (~6:20 pace) and it didn't help that I had a few beers immediately before running. Still, felt pretty good and nice to have company for a change.

Sunday, October 21, 2007

October 21st

9 miles at Arastradero

Ran the first 6 with Welsh and then added on another 3 to bring me to 50 miles in 6 runs for the week. Pleasantly warm out for a late October morning and nice to get back on the trails for a change. I think the plan at this point is to work up to 60 in 7 runs through November and eventually add in a tempo run or fartlek once a week. Need to work in a longer run of 12-13 next week.

Friday, October 19, 2007

October 19th

8 miles at Baylands

Easy run with Jeanne before work. Left shin has been bugging me lately. Really need to ice it this weekend.

Thursday, October 18, 2007

October 18th

7 miles at Shoreline

Mostly just loops around campus. Ran the second part of this run with Crosby. Didn't feel so hot from a late night at Ugly's and eating like crap, but legs felt pretty good.

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

October 17th

7 miles at Moffet/Evelyn Creek

Ran out Moffet, on the roads, and back along the Evelyn Creek bike path. It's been taking me a few miles just to get warmed up recently. I typically feel like crap for the first three or so before things smooth out.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

October 16th

10 miles at Baylands

Didn't eat much last night and felt really tired today. Felt better on the way back but still pretty exhausted. Calves were pretty sore, too. May stick them in a makeshift icebath tonight.

Monday, October 15, 2007

October 15th

9 miles at Evelyn Creek bike path

Nice night run as the sun went down. Felt great on the way back and was probably running sub 6:00 pace by the end of it without straining.

October 14th

9 miles around Boulder

Much easier run today than yesterday, which was maybe the slowest run I've ever done. Ran around the CU XC course and around Boulder with Nark. Nice cold, wet day that reminded me of New England.

40 miles in 5 runs

Not a great week of running but the traveling probably didn't help. And neither did the being hungover at 8000ft.

October 13th

9 miles at Magnolia Road

This was pretty brutal run, partly because I'm not in great shape, partly because it's at 8000ft, and partly because Nark and I had gone to the Great American Beer Festival the night before.

Out in Boulder for the weekend. Great to hang out with Nark and Ross. Met Aaron "Boups" of "Boup-a-Loop" fame and some of Nark's other friends. Snagged lots of running gear from Nark.

Thursday, October 11, 2007

October 11th

6 miles at Shoreline

Rolled at a pretty good clip today. Started on the roads and ran back along the golf course. Leaving tomorrow morning for Denver. May take tomorrow off. Hopefully going to get to run Mags on Sunday. We'll see if I survive.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

October 10th

10 miles at Baylands

It rained last night, so it was a perfect temperature tonight. Did the usual loop along the bay. Legs felt pretty achy at first, but loosened up about 4 miles in.

I got to see the founder of Patagonia speak at work today. He is an incredible man who grew the company to a $300 million a year business while using environmentally noninvasive methods of production, donating 1% of their annual sales to green organizations, and passing up the opportunity to make a buttload of money by going public or selling the company. He actually deliberately capped the growth of his company so that he wouldn't have to compromise any of his core values.

The guy is like 70 years old, has been doing what he loves for a living (climbs rocks and surfs) for the past 30 years, is one of the most successful businessmen in the country, and has resisted the temptation to sell out. I think that's pretty awesome.

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

October 9th

6 miles Shoreline and roads

It's starting to get dark out really early here, making for perfect running weather at like 6pm. Ran on the roads around campus, then around the lake at Shoreline. Thought I'd be sore and stiff from playing basketball, but my legs felt great today. My cardiovascular fitness is really hurting though.

October 8

No running. Went to see Jose Gonzalez perform in SF at night and didn't get back until Too Late o'clock.

Sore as balls from playing basketball all of Sunday. I managed to beat Justin 2 out of 3 times in 1 on 1 by scores of 11-5, 7-11, and 11-3. I made approximately 21 layups (missed approximately 22) and had roughly 14 steals in those three games.

Sunday, October 7, 2007

October 7th

7 miles Fight Club out-and-back

Went to the Bluegrass Festival with Welsh and some of his friends yesterday and stayed out pretty late. Wasn't sure Welsh would wake up this morning but he did. Since about May, Welsh has been running significantly less and drinking significantly more, so our weekend runs have been adhering to a pattern of short Fight Club runs where I spend most of the run telling Welsh what he did the night before. He claims this is the first week in months that he's had more miles run than beers consumed.

I, on the other hand, am feeling great running. 46 miles in 6 runs this week. Was a good first week of regular running since the relay. Will probably do about the same next week since it will be busy. Flying out to Denver to visit Nark on Friday. Will hopefully get a chance to catch up with Ross.

Saturday, October 6, 2007

October 6th

10 miles at Los Gatos Creek

Longer run to stretch out the legs. Feeling good and glad to be running again. A couple days of good music coming up. Going to a bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park with Welsh and some of his friends later this afternoon and then seeing Jose Gonzalez at the Great American Music Hall on Monday and again at work on Tuesday. Yeah, that's right. Jose Gonazalez is performing at work.

October 5th

6 miles at Moffet/Evelyn Creek Trail

This is an irritating little loop that runs past the NASA research center and hooks up with the EC bike path. Glad to be done with a long week.

Thursday, October 4, 2007

October 4th

10 miles at Baylands

Was only planning to run about 7 but felt great and did a longer run. Need to whip myself into just good enough shape to run Magnolia Road with Nark next weekend.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

October 3rd

7 miles at Baylands

Ran nice and easy with Jeanne today in the morning.

Tuesday, October 2, 2007

October 2nd

6 miles at Shoreline/Baylands

About 5 steps into my run, my friend Crosby ran up beside me and I ended up doing my run with him. He won the SF Half Marathon this year and has ran sub-30 in the 10k at Pomona, which is another way of saying that he could kick my ass at any distance even if I was in shape. Unfortunately, he lives in the city and is frequently injured so I don't run with him much.

Some random dude doing a tempo run passed us in the middle of our run. It was very frustrating.

Sunday, September 30, 2007

September 30th

5 miles on the roads.

Will get back on the running train this week.

September 29th

6 miles at The Dish

My parents are in town for the week so haven't run. Don't particularly like The Dish, but decided to give my parents the obligatory tour. Went to the Stanford Invite in the afternoon. They didn't look all that impressive. Ran into Chavez, which was cool. Beginning to write only in sentence fragments. Bad sign.

Sunday, September 23, 2007

September 23rd

5 miles around Shoreline

Played a bunch of basketball in the afternoon and then did a quick run. I have a final due on Tuesday and my parents will be in town all week so will probably just run whatever and whenever I feel like it.

Saturday, September 22, 2007

September 22nd

5 miles on the roads.

Haven't run since the relay on account of laziness. Just got back from seeing The Killers last night in Tahoe. It was probably the best show I've ever been to. I got two hours of sleep, though, so feeling pretty rough today.

Going to try and get in shape for the February relay in Arizona.

Sunday, September 16, 2007

September 14th-16th

Didn't run on Thursday because I was flying all day.

Reach the Beach went okay. Check the other blog for a full recap. Ran 5:56 pace for my first 7.3 mile leg, got lost on my second leg and added about 6-7 minutes to a challenging 7.2 mile leg, and crashed and burned on what should have been the easiest of my legs, a 2.5 mile pancake flat closer.
We won the corporate and co-ed divisions and finished 6th overall.

Got to see Ingram (he shaved his head and looks kind of scary), Kate, and Hyland and met Sean Kelly at the fist exchange zone.

I wold total up my miles for the week but I'm so exhausted I don't think I can do simple additional right now.

Signed on for the Arizona relay in February.

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

September 12th

5 miles at Baylands

Feeling great. Calves still pretty sore but keeping ice on them every night. Getting pretty stoked for Reach to Beach. I leave tomorrow. Looking at the legs again, I have a 7 mile leg that goes straight down, a 7 mile leg that goes straight up, and a 2.5 mile leg that's pretty flat. I think I'll be ready for this.

Verbally commited to doing the next ultra-relay in AZ on February 29th. Maybe I'll make this one of my "things".

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

September 11th

7 miles on the roads/cemetery

Hammered out to the cemetery, recovered going around it, and hammered back as a pseudo-workout before this weekend. Actually felt pretty smooth.

September 10th

No running.

Exhausted. If I cared, I'd probably get my blood tested.

Sunday, September 9, 2007

September 9th

5 miles at Baylands

Ran with Welsh in the morning. Still feeling really sluggish altogether, physically/mentally/emotionally/gastrointestinally.

46 in 6 runs for the week. Little aches and pains starting to flare up, so I took it easy towards the end of the week. No big deal. My fitness isn't going to change much between now and the race on Friday/Saturday, so I might as well just go and try to have fun while running hard and trying not to backdoor.

September 8th

8 miles at Baylands+Fight Club

Was going to run long today, but my body is telling me it's very tired after a really stressful two weeks. Also, got a nasty cramp in my left calf that I didn't want to aggravate any more. Got some ice on it.

Friday, September 7, 2007

September 7th

7 miles at Baylands

Took it easy today. It's been a really stressful last two weeks.

Thursday, September 6, 2007

September 6th

10 miles at Baylands

Back to the grind. Same shit, different day. Felt really good today. Hammered 5 of the middle miles as a pseudo-workout. Very windy today and got started later than I usually do, so it was nice and cool out. Will try and finish this week strong and then take it easy next week before the race. Maybe an easy Sachem-style fartlek early in the week.

Also, I decided I'd go dry for the month. I think it'll be good for me (physically or otherwise). I may give myself a cheat day when I go to Boston (there's a place in Brookline I have to check out) but other than that I think it'll be a good challenge.

September 5th

No running.

Had class until 9pm and was too exhausted to run afterwards as usual.

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

September 4th

11 miles at Baylands

Felt great today. Calves still a bit sore but I can deal with that. I think I'll be fine at Reach to Beach on the flat legs, but very concerned about how I'll fare on the hills.

Just found out Ingram will be racing R2B as well, so hopefull will be able to meet up with him.

Monday, September 3, 2007

September 3rd

5 miles at Rancho San Antonio

Ran with Noah again. Wanted to go longer but pretty tired from yesterday's run plus driving around all day entertaining Noah and Welsh's high school buddy. Hammered the last two miles or so. May double back tonight a little easier and longer if I feel ambitious. Left calf is a bit tight from running the hills yesterday.

Sunday, September 2, 2007

September 2nd

14 miles at Arastradero

Ran with Noah in the morning. Brutally dehydrated and had trouble getting up the mountain. Legs felt fine but was really light-headed and had difficulty breathing. Coming down was no problem. We hammered the last three miles in because Noah said, "You can't call it a death march to the finish unless you hammer it in." Whatever.

58 in 6 runs for the week. Pretty solid.

Going up to Russian River Brewing Company this afternoon.

Saturday, September 1, 2007

September 1st

10 miles at Baylands+Fight Club

Hammered a few miles in the morning by myself and then putted around the Fight Club path with Welsh for the last 5. I think I need to try to get in at least two workouts before Reach to Beach, maybe a fartlek next week and a tempo run early in the week of the race.

Noah is getting in in about an hour, and we'll do a long run tomorrow.

Going to be an awesome weekend: College football all day today and then Russian River Brewing Company tomorrow afternoon.

Friday, August 31, 2007

August 31st

5 miles at Baylands

Well, today certainly didn't help me get in shape for Reach to Beach. I did a crappy, short run at Baylands after downing 7 beers at The Sports Page after work. This was one of the worst weeks I've had since I've been in California, stresswise. Last night I worked on my midterm from 5pm-12am straight and still didn't finish. Woof.

Noah will be getting in tomorrow, so I can't tell you how much I'm going to savor the long weekend.

Thursday, August 30, 2007

August 30th

9 miles along Evelyn Creek bike path

Is it possible to get in shape in two weeks? I'm already starting to regret signing on for Reach to Beach. I have to run a moderate 7 mile leg, a "very hard" 9 mile leg, and an easy 2.5 mile leg.

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

August 29th

No running.

Just got asked today to run Reach to Beach Sept. 14-15th with a co-ed team from work. While I don't particularly want to do it and I'm not in very good shape right now, it is in New Hampshire so I decided I'd do it. I probably won't get a chance to make it to Hanover, but it will give me a chance to hang out in Boston on Saturday night and knock off a few more places on that Top 50 Beer Bars list. Hoping that I'll get to see George or Harry's families and Ingram while I'm there. If anyone's in the Boston area on that Saturday and wants to hang out, shoot me a blitz.

August 28th

10 miles at Baylands.

Today for variety I ran the loop backwards. Uggggghhhhhhh...

Been feeling pretty drained lately. I've been staying up pretty late (some nights for good reasons, other nights not so good) and having trouble sleeping again, so that has quite a bit to do with it. Also, I have a MIDTERM due on Friday. Kill me now, kill me now, oh please kill me now.

Noah will be around this weekend so it'll be nice to have company on my long run. Again, I have to reiterate that Welsh needs to get his ass healthy.

Speaking of Welsh, I've started using the term "to Welsh out," which basically means "to sell out," "to be lame," "to soil," etc.

In other Welsh news, I continue to be the perfect wingman for Welsh and he has failed to capitalize and worse, he's also failed to reciprocate. In the past week, I've introduced him to one girl who's respectably cute and single, and gotten this other girl whom he has a crush on to get food with us post-trivia. In return, the only people he introduces me to (despite interacting with lots of cute, intelligent Stanford girls on a daily basis) are the Indian dudes in his PhD program. C'mon! Quid pro freakin' quo, Welsh.

Monday, August 27, 2007

August 27th

10 miles at Baylands

Felt kind of sluggish today, probably from the long run yesterday (or possibly the enormous patty melt I consumed for lunch).

Sunday, August 26, 2007

August 26th

13 miles at Baylands+Fight Club Shit Loops

55 in 6 runs for the week.

Felt great the whole way. Ran in the evening when it was nice and cool out. Was pleased to get in 55 this week. Once class ends in a few weeks doing 7 runs will be much more doable and I'll be able to bump up the volume.

I was surprised at how good I felt today after pub crawling for charity in SF until 2:00am last night, having to wake up early and teach all morning, and having eating nothing but a small burrito all day. Pub crawl last night was pretty fun. Welsh had some memorable moments, including yelling "SoCo for Shoko!" about 15 times. Best Welsh moment was on the ride back. Picture this seating arrangement: I'm driving, and my friend Justin is in the passenger seat. In the back, this girl is sitting in the middle and Welsh is passed out on her shoulder while her boyfriend is in the seat on her opposite side.

Saturday, August 25, 2007

August 25th

8 miles around Saratoga High School

Got up early to watch Hari run in the Marshall Clark 4 Miler. He fell short of his sub-20:00 goal but still won in 20:30, beating some high school clown by 10 seconds. I did a bit of running during the race and then did Hari's warmdown with him and Stanford star Alicia Follmar. Nice to have some company for a change.

Finally got some new running shoes this afternoon.

August 24th

7 miles at Baylands

Felt kind of weird and lightheaded today. Maybe just dehydrated or something.

Other accomplishments for the night:
  • Watched Slackers
  • Watched The Sandlot
  • Ate a bag and a half of Hint of Lime chips

Thursday, August 23, 2007

August 23rd

10 miles at Baylands

Actually felt great today. Nice, easy run and even got rolling at a decent clip (probably 6:20s) for the last 4-5 miles with the wind. If I can get in a decent run tomorrow, I'll be able to get in more volume than I anticipated this week, which would be great. Hari is going to be around this weekend so hopefully I'll get in a long run with him on Sunday.

August 22nd

No running. Slept in and then had class until 9 after work. Wiped out.

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

August 21st

7 miles to the cemetery

Got up early to run before work. Had a pretty nasty stitch on the way back. Really wish Welsh would sack up and get healthy. I really need someone to run with.

Monday, August 20, 2007

August 20th

10 miles at Baylands

Windy as hell out today. Felt pretty dehydrated and had to take a quick water break at mile 7 or so. Still kind of drained from last week. Legs feeling good but for some reason I've been having some breathing issues the last few weeks, just breathing hard right from the start of runs.

Need to buy some new shoes.

Still no sign of the mountain lion.

Sunday, August 19, 2007

August 19th

9 miles at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve

Decided to try out some new trails today. This one turned out to be better for hiking than running. 3.5 miles straight down and then 4.5 miles straight up. Missed a turn at the Razorback Trail and went in the wrong direction for a mile. Had to do a tiny bit of Gallowalking on the brutal 1600 ft. climb between 3.5-6 miles. Not a terrible run, but probably won't do it again.

Followed up the run with a burger and beer on the deck at Alice's Restaurant, this biker diner (yeah, that's right, a "biker diner") in Woodside and then a few pitchers on the patio at Alpine Inn with the usual crew.

Next week will be a tough week for running. Will probably be able to get in 45-50 in 6 runs. Still kind of drained from the busy week and donating blood.

Saturday, August 18, 2007

August 18th

7 miles along the Stevens Creek bike path

Was too lazy to drive anywhere decent to run. This has been a pretty weak running week, and next week is not looking any better. In happier news, I finally got my Sandbagger Track Club singlet from Burnham:

Above: David "Bagging Sand Since 1984" Burnham

August 17th

5 miles around Shoreline/Baylands

Day 2 of the mountain lion watch and still no sighting. Ran after work and then went to Welter's Funhouse and eventually the Nuthouse with Welsh and the usual suspects from work. Welter and Nick are trying to brew their own beer. They did a pretty bushleague job last week, which involved using a pair of unsanitary pliers to open stuff. Hence, they've named their flagship beer "Rusty Pliers Ale," or as I renamed it, "Funhouse RPA".

In today's Welsh Update, Welsh made us go to the Nuthouse last night (despite the fact that he had been there earlier in the night) just to see these two Teach For America girls that he likes, then spent the night ignoring them, electing instead to play foosball with Randy and Ajay.

Thursday, August 16, 2007

August 16th

5 miles around Shoreline

There was a mountain lion sighting at Shoreline earlier today and I wanted to check it out. No sign of any mountain lions, although I do frequently see cabbits there.

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

August 13th-15th

Haven't run in the last three days. Traveled for work on Monday and Tuesday and gave blood today, so running probably wouldn't have been a very good idea. Will chalk this week up as a lost cause and just run whatever the next few days.

Sunday, August 12, 2007

August 12th

PM: 3.5 miles on the roads

Went to Toronado with Welsh and some friends from work in the afternoon. Ate some boar sausage at the place next door and downed a pint of Pliny the Elder, 2 Toronado 50/50 Anniversary Ales, and a Lost Abbey Cable Car which was unbelievable. Was still hungry afterwards and dummied two slices of pizza from Pizza My Heart in downtown Palo Alto before dropping Welsh off at Tiny House. I don't think I've ever eaten at that place 100% sober. Delicious.

Did a bushleague night run when I got back to bring me to 50 miles in 6 runs this week. Glad that I did it since this week will be a bitch running-wise. I'll be in LA for work on Monday and Tuesday and don't know if I'll be able to run much. Glad to have gotten in a long run for the week. Will try for 50-55 in 6 runs this week.

August 12th

AM: 7 miles around the cemetery

This run is actually 3 miles on the roads, a mile around the cemetery across from Gunn High School, and 3 miles back. It's a sucky run except for the cemetery part, which I like because it's quiet and there are flowers everywhere. Also, there are dead people six feet below you every step of the way, which is kind of creepy to think about.

Ankle didn't swell up too badly from yesterday and my hip felt fine. Probably just sore yesterday from doing my first real long run in a while.

Will do a HUGELY bushleague shakeout tonight to get 50 in 6 runs for the week.

Saturday, August 11, 2007

August 11th

14 miles at Arastradero

Arastradero is my favorite place to run here. It's about 3 miles out, an 8 mile loop, and 3 miles back. The first 4-5 miles of the loop go way up the mountain and the view at the top is unreal. I rolled my ankle pretty good on the way down but was able to hardguy my way back to my car without doing any more damage. It'll probably swell up tomorrow. Right hip was feeling kind of weird. Will have to keep an eye on that.

Ran into Paly coach (and friend of Welsh, Shawman, and Nark) Jeff Billing and his high school guys as I was finishing. Took great satisfaction in learning that they only did 6 today. May try to run with the high school kids next weekend. No sign of Rising Star Phillip MacQuitty (4:23/8:40something 3k as a frosh), who will earn the nickname "MacShitty" unless he starts training during the off season.

Feel like kind of a sandbagger for not running yesterday. May do a bushleague double tomorrow.

Usually, Arastradero runs are followed by a double cheeseburger, fries, and a pitcher of Fat Devil (Fat Tire + Devil's Canyon) at Alpine Inn half a mile up the road from the finish. However, I passed on that today since there's an IPA festival in Hayward this afternoon that I might go to.

Peacehorse.

August 10th

Didn't run today on account of going to the Nuthouse with Welsh and playing darts.

In other news, Welsh continues to not introduce me to cute Stanford girls.

Thursday, August 9, 2007

August 9th

10 miles around Baylands

A decent but very windy run. I've been doing most of my runs in lightweight trainers lately for no reason besides the fact that my regular trainers are worn out and the lightweight ones are still in good condition. I'll sack up and get a decent pair of shoes sometime soon. Sucks not to have the team discount. I think I can hit 50 in 6 runs this week, do 60 in 7 runs next week, and then start clipping off 70s if everything feels good. Will try for a 12 mile long run this weekend.

August 8th

No running

We had our company offsite on the beach in Santa Cruz today. I chugged 6 beers between noon and 1:30 and then went back to work at 2:30 until 6. Then I had my business class from 6-9pm and didn't get home until 9:30. Running was not an option at this point.

Tuesday, August 7, 2007

August 7th

7.5 miles on the road

An hour after stuffing my face with chicken wings and chugging 3 Blue Moons at a barbecue, I did a little road run in the dark. I ran past the house of this girl that I like in the hopes that she would see me running shirtless and be impressed or something. This didn't happen, and in retrospect it's probably a good thing since all she would have seen was me running really slowly and trying not to boot.

Got accosted by the crazy guy who hangs out in front of Whole Foods on the way out and again on the way back of my run.

Monday, August 6, 2007

August 6th

8 miles at Baylands.

Basically, I have two runs that I do on weekdays when I don't have time to drive to trails. On days that I have to run before work, I run an out and back on the roads and partly on a bike path anywhere between 5 and 9 miles. Every other day, I run right after work at the Baylands, the converted landfill behind my building. It's a crushed gravel out and back of anywhere between 5-11 miles. It smells like sulfur. Welsh and I sometimes run an extension of this he calls "Fight Club" because it runs by some ghetto industrial plants.

July 30th-August 5th

45 miles in 6 runs.
0 x 1000s
0 strides
0 core
0 lifting
2 x shrub, 1 x 2-cup with Ring and Welsh on Wednesday

Was happy to get in two longer runs of 10 and 11 miles this week. Great to see Noah in LA and nice to have company on a run for a change.

I'm feeling really beat up at the moment, but only because I drove 900 miles in the last 3 days and just got back from a nenow. Immediate aches aside, everything is feeling good, but that's clearly just because I've done exactly one and a half workouts since March of 2006. Right now I'm still enjoying the luxury of running whatever I feel like, whenever I feel like it. I really want to get back into shape, but don't really have a reason to. If anyone has any good ideas for races in the next year or so, let me know. Noah wants to do this European style XC race in Iowa around Thanksgiving, or another relay in Southern Illinois next year. I think Neal wants to do Hood to Coast next year as well.

The other thing I desperately want is some people to run with. Since Chris Estwanik moved to Bermuda to make perfect little babies with his perfect little wife, there aren't really any guys at work whom I like running with all that much besides two guys who live in San Francisco. It's been a weird transition from collegiate running in that at school, I did everything with my teammates, and running was the most social aspect of my life. Now, running is the most solitary part of my day. It would help if Welsh would sack up and fix his back or hip or knee or whatever it is that's bothering him. I think we're on exact opposite training schedules. Every time he's healthy, I'm injured or out of shape, and whenever I'm in shape, he's limping around like an old man.

August 5th: To Your Marks

Since everyone else is putting their training logs online, I will too. This blog will be strictly for running related posts. If you're expecting stories of drunken debauchery and failed attempts to impress girls, please visit cmahrun.blogspot.com.
