August 31st

5 miles at Baylands

Well, today certainly didn't help me get in shape for Reach to Beach. I did a crappy, short run at Baylands after downing 7 beers at The Sports Page after work. This was one of the worst weeks I've had since I've been in California, stresswise. Last night I worked on my midterm from 5pm-12am straight and still didn't finish. Woof.

Noah will be getting in tomorrow, so I can't tell you how much I'm going to savor the long weekend.

August 30th

9 miles along Evelyn Creek bike path

Is it possible to get in shape in two weeks? I'm already starting to regret signing on for Reach to Beach. I have to run a moderate 7 mile leg, a "very hard" 9 mile leg, and an easy 2.5 mile leg.

August 29th

No running.

Just got asked today to run Reach to Beach Sept. 14-15th with a co-ed team from work. While I don't particularly want to do it and I'm not in very good shape right now, it is in New Hampshire so I decided I'd do it. I probably won't get a chance to make it to Hanover, but it will give me a chance to hang out in Boston on Saturday night and knock off a few more places on that Top 50 Beer Bars list. Hoping that I'll get to see George or Harry's families and Ingram while I'm there. If anyone's in the Boston area on that Saturday and wants to hang out, shoot me a blitz.

August 28th

10 miles at Baylands.

Today for variety I ran the loop backwards. Uggggghhhhhhh...

Been feeling pretty drained lately. I've been staying up pretty late (some nights for good reasons, other nights not so good) and having trouble sleeping again, so that has quite a bit to do with it. Also, I have a MIDTERM due on Friday. Kill me now, kill me now, oh please kill me now.

Noah will be around this weekend so it'll be nice to have company on my long run. Again, I have to reiterate that Welsh needs to get his ass healthy.

Speaking of Welsh, I've started using the term "to Welsh out," which basically means "to sell out," "to be lame," "to soil," etc.

In other Welsh news, I continue to be the perfect wingman for Welsh and he has failed to capitalize and worse, he's also failed to reciprocate. In the past week, I've introduced him to one girl who's respectably cute and single, and gotten this other girl whom he has a crush on to get food with us post-trivia. In return, the only people he introduces me to (despite interacting with lots of cute, intelligent Stanford girls on a daily basis) are the Indian dudes in his PhD program. C'mon! Quid pro freakin' quo, Welsh.

August 27th

10 miles at Baylands

Felt kind of sluggish today, probably from the long run yesterday (or possibly the enormous patty melt I consumed for lunch).

August 26th

13 miles at Baylands+Fight Club Shit Loops

55 in 6 runs for the week.

Felt great the whole way. Ran in the evening when it was nice and cool out. Was pleased to get in 55 this week. Once class ends in a few weeks doing 7 runs will be much more doable and I'll be able to bump up the volume.

I was surprised at how good I felt today after pub crawling for charity in SF until 2:00am last night, having to wake up early and teach all morning, and having eating nothing but a small burrito all day. Pub crawl last night was pretty fun. Welsh had some memorable moments, including yelling "SoCo for Shoko!" about 15 times. Best Welsh moment was on the ride back. Picture this seating arrangement: I'm driving, and my friend Justin is in the passenger seat. In the back, this girl is sitting in the middle and Welsh is passed out on her shoulder while her boyfriend is in the seat on her opposite side.

August 25th

8 miles around Saratoga High School

Got up early to watch Hari run in the Marshall Clark 4 Miler. He fell short of his sub-20:00 goal but still won in 20:30, beating some high school clown by 10 seconds. I did a bit of running during the race and then did Hari's warmdown with him and Stanford star Alicia Follmar. Nice to have some company for a change.

Finally got some new running shoes this afternoon.

August 24th

7 miles at Baylands

Felt kind of weird and lightheaded today. Maybe just dehydrated or something.

Other accomplishments for the night:
  • Watched Slackers
  • Watched The Sandlot
  • Ate a bag and a half of Hint of Lime chips

August 23rd

10 miles at Baylands

Actually felt great today. Nice, easy run and even got rolling at a decent clip (probably 6:20s) for the last 4-5 miles with the wind. If I can get in a decent run tomorrow, I'll be able to get in more volume than I anticipated this week, which would be great. Hari is going to be around this weekend so hopefully I'll get in a long run with him on Sunday.

August 22nd

No running. Slept in and then had class until 9 after work. Wiped out.

August 21st

7 miles to the cemetery

Got up early to run before work. Had a pretty nasty stitch on the way back. Really wish Welsh would sack up and get healthy. I really need someone to run with.

August 20th

10 miles at Baylands

Windy as hell out today. Felt pretty dehydrated and had to take a quick water break at mile 7 or so. Still kind of drained from last week. Legs feeling good but for some reason I've been having some breathing issues the last few weeks, just breathing hard right from the start of runs.

Need to buy some new shoes.

Still no sign of the mountain lion.

August 19th

9 miles at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve

Decided to try out some new trails today. This one turned out to be better for hiking than running. 3.5 miles straight down and then 4.5 miles straight up. Missed a turn at the Razorback Trail and went in the wrong direction for a mile. Had to do a tiny bit of Gallowalking on the brutal 1600 ft. climb between 3.5-6 miles. Not a terrible run, but probably won't do it again.

Followed up the run with a burger and beer on the deck at Alice's Restaurant, this biker diner (yeah, that's right, a "biker diner") in Woodside and then a few pitchers on the patio at Alpine Inn with the usual crew.

Next week will be a tough week for running. Will probably be able to get in 45-50 in 6 runs. Still kind of drained from the busy week and donating blood.

August 18th

7 miles along the Stevens Creek bike path

Was too lazy to drive anywhere decent to run. This has been a pretty weak running week, and next week is not looking any better. In happier news, I finally got my Sandbagger Track Club singlet from Burnham:

August 17th

5 miles around Shoreline/Baylands

Day 2 of the mountain lion watch and still no sighting. Ran after work and then went to Welter's Funhouse and eventually the Nuthouse with Welsh and the usual suspects from work. Welter and Nick are trying to brew their own beer. They did a pretty bushleague job last week, which involved using a pair of unsanitary pliers to open stuff. Hence, they've named their flagship beer "Rusty Pliers Ale," or as I renamed it, "Funhouse RPA".

In today's Welsh Update, Welsh made us go to the Nuthouse last night (despite the fact that he had been there earlier in the night) just to see these two Teach For America girls that he likes, then spent the night ignoring them, electing instead to play foosball with Randy and Ajay.

August 16th

5 miles around Shoreline

There was a mountain lion sighting at Shoreline earlier today and I wanted to check it out. No sign of any mountain lions, although I do frequently see cabbits there.

August 13th-15th

Haven't run in the last three days. Traveled for work on Monday and Tuesday and gave blood today, so running probably wouldn't have been a very good idea. Will chalk this week up as a lost cause and just run whatever the next few days.

August 12th

PM: 3.5 miles on the roads

Went to Toronado with Welsh and some friends from work in the afternoon. Ate some boar sausage at the place next door and downed a pint of Pliny the Elder, 2 Toronado 50/50 Anniversary Ales, and a Lost Abbey Cable Car which was unbelievable. Was still hungry afterwards and dummied two slices of pizza from Pizza My Heart in downtown Palo Alto before dropping Welsh off at Tiny House. I don't think I've ever eaten at that place 100% sober. Delicious.

Did a bushleague night run when I got back to bring me to 50 miles in 6 runs this week. Glad that I did it since this week will be a bitch running-wise. I'll be in LA for work on Monday and Tuesday and don't know if I'll be able to run much. Glad to have gotten in a long run for the week. Will try for 50-55 in 6 runs this week.

August 12th

AM: 7 miles around the cemetery

This run is actually 3 miles on the roads, a mile around the cemetery across from Gunn High School, and 3 miles back. It's a sucky run except for the cemetery part, which I like because it's quiet and there are flowers everywhere. Also, there are dead people six feet below you every step of the way, which is kind of creepy to think about.

Ankle didn't swell up too badly from yesterday and my hip felt fine. Probably just sore yesterday from doing my first real long run in a while.

Will do a HUGELY bushleague shakeout tonight to get 50 in 6 runs for the week.

August 11th

14 miles at Arastradero

Arastradero is my favorite place to run here. It's about 3 miles out, an 8 mile loop, and 3 miles back. The first 4-5 miles of the loop go way up the mountain and the view at the top is unreal. I rolled my ankle pretty good on the way down but was able to hardguy my way back to my car without doing any more damage. It'll probably swell up tomorrow. Right hip was feeling kind of weird. Will have to keep an eye on that.

Ran into Paly coach (and friend of Welsh, Shawman, and Nark) Jeff Billing and his high school guys as I was finishing. Took great satisfaction in learning that they only did 6 today. May try to run with the high school kids next weekend. No sign of Rising Star Phillip MacQuitty (4:23/8:40something 3k as a frosh), who will earn the nickname "MacShitty" unless he starts training during the off season.

Feel like kind of a sandbagger for not running yesterday. May do a bushleague double tomorrow.

Usually, Arastradero runs are followed by a double cheeseburger, fries, and a pitcher of Fat Devil (Fat Tire + Devil's Canyon) at Alpine Inn half a mile up the road from the finish. However, I passed on that today since there's an IPA festival in Hayward this afternoon that I might go to.

Peacehorse.

August 10th

Didn't run today on account of going to the Nuthouse with Welsh and playing darts.

In other news, Welsh continues to not introduce me to cute Stanford girls.

August 9th

10 miles around Baylands

A decent but very windy run. I've been doing most of my runs in lightweight trainers lately for no reason besides the fact that my regular trainers are worn out and the lightweight ones are still in good condition. I'll sack up and get a decent pair of shoes sometime soon. Sucks not to have the team discount. I think I can hit 50 in 6 runs this week, do 60 in 7 runs next week, and then start clipping off 70s if everything feels good. Will try for a 12 mile long run this weekend.

August 8th

No running

We had our company offsite on the beach in Santa Cruz today. I chugged 6 beers between noon and 1:30 and then went back to work at 2:30 until 6. Then I had my business class from 6-9pm and didn't get home until 9:30. Running was not an option at this point.

August 7th

7.5 miles on the road

An hour after stuffing my face with chicken wings and chugging 3 Blue Moons at a barbecue, I did a little road run in the dark. I ran past the house of this girl that I like in the hopes that she would see me running shirtless and be impressed or something. This didn't happen, and in retrospect it's probably a good thing since all she would have seen was me running really slowly and trying not to boot.

Got accosted by the crazy guy who hangs out in front of Whole Foods on the way out and again on the way back of my run.

August 6th

8 miles at Baylands.

Basically, I have two runs that I do on weekdays when I don't have time to drive to trails. On days that I have to run before work, I run an out and back on the roads and partly on a bike path anywhere between 5 and 9 miles. Every other day, I run right after work at the Baylands, the converted landfill behind my building. It's a crushed gravel out and back of anywhere between 5-11 miles. It smells like sulfur. Welsh and I sometimes run an extension of this he calls "Fight Club" because it runs by some ghetto industrial plants.

July 30th-August 5th

45 miles in 6 runs.
0 x 1000s
0 strides
0 core
0 lifting
2 x shrub, 1 x 2-cup with Ring and Welsh on Wednesday

Was happy to get in two longer runs of 10 and 11 miles this week. Great to see Noah in LA and nice to have company on a run for a change.

I'm feeling really beat up at the moment, but only because I drove 900 miles in the last 3 days and just got back from a nenow. Immediate aches aside, everything is feeling good, but that's clearly just because I've done exactly one and a half workouts since March of 2006. Right now I'm still enjoying the luxury of running whatever I feel like, whenever I feel like it. I really want to get back into shape, but don't really have a reason to. If anyone has any good ideas for races in the next year or so, let me know. Noah wants to do this European style XC race in Iowa around Thanksgiving, or another relay in Southern Illinois next year. I think Neal wants to do Hood to Coast next year as well.

The other thing I desperately want is some people to run with. Since Chris Estwanik moved to Bermuda to make perfect little babies with his perfect little wife, there aren't really any guys at work whom I like running with all that much besides two guys who live in San Francisco. It's been a weird transition from collegiate running in that at school, I did everything with my teammates, and running was the most social aspect of my life. Now, running is the most solitary part of my day. It would help if Welsh would sack up and fix his back or hip or knee or whatever it is that's bothering him. I think we're on exact opposite training schedules. Every time he's healthy, I'm injured or out of shape, and whenever I'm in shape, he's limping around like an old man.

August 5th: To Your Marks

Since everyone else is putting their training logs online, I will too. This blog will be strictly for running related posts. If you're expecting stories of drunken debauchery and failed attempts to impress girls, please visit cmahrun.blogspot.com.
